Updated UK & DR Trade Statistics

The United Kingdom and the Dominican Republic maintain an active business relationship for more than 150 years ago. The Dominican Republic, being the largest economy in the Caribbean - and despite not being part of the British Caribbean - has very strong historical ties to the UK, because it was the first country to recognize the Dominican Independence.

According to the Centre of Investment and Exportation of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD), British investment in the Dominican Republic exceeds US $ 1.000 billion, being the United Kingdom the fifth country in the Dominican Republic with more investment. British investments in the country are focused on the services sector, insurance, financial services, auditing services, call centers, pharmaceuticals, aviation, infrastructure, education, film industry, alcoholic beverages, manufacture, among others, with more than 20 British companies and firms established or that are doing business in the country.

The Dominican Republic is the second UK market in Central America and the Caribbean. The UK is the largest importer of Dominican fruits amounting to more than US $ 90 million. Most of Dominican products imported to the UK meet the standards of fair trade, and our direct connections - both via air and maritime - our products arrive faster than any other Caribbean or Latin American country - less than 10 hours by plane and between 9 to 13 days by boat.

On the other hand, the National Council of Free Zones (CNZFE) records the cumulative investment from the United Kingdom to 2014 for an amount of US $ 175.19 million, distributed in several companies, which are engaged in the production of tobacco, materials and various instruments, services, construction, electronics, and metals manufacturing, generating more than 5,600 direct jobs.
*2015 Statistical Report, prepared by the National Council of Free Zones (CNZFE), has not yet been published.

In the last six years the volume of trade between the two countries amounted to US$ 1.345 billion, according to the Center for Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD). Therefore, with regard to trade, the Dominican Republic has a favorable trade balance with the United Kingdom.
